phase one : mission statements

The Main Street Landing Project must not lose sight of those individuals who will experience the final product of our work. It will be the amount of caring and a sense of giving that the team brings to the process of the project development that will really make the ultimate difference to ensure the physical, emotional and spiritual sense of the project. 8/24/93

We are committed to five things:

  1. That we create something that is beautiful and fun
  2. That we create an environment that is a place for everyone
  3. That we try to create this project without falling prey to the politics of the City
  4. That we create an environmentally friendly and sensitive project
  5. That we create a financially viable project

Neagley Construction - Mark Neagley

  1. Admire the work of the individuals that make up the design team.
  2. Enjoy the entire team as people first, business associates second.
  3. Honored to be associated with this project.
  4. From a resident standpoint I believe that this project is essential for the present and future health of Burlington.
  5. I like the idea of exploring the cutting edge of sustainable architecture and construction. Want to be perceived as a leader in this area.
  6. Reached a point in my life where quality of work and people I work with supersedes all other aspects.
  7. Long term involvements are important to me...as people get to know one another a lot of the posturing around business is removed and energy becomes more single minded.
  8. I believe this project presents us with an opportunity to do something grand in Burlington, using a process that could change the way people perceive development.

In Short: To change Burlingtonians perception of developers and development to the visionary concept of team development where people and the earth are of prime importance, integrated as ONE. Manifest that idea by being leaders in sustainable architecture and construction using Phase One as the model for humanistic, creative, successful endearing development.

John Anderson - Architect

  1. The design will reflect the local, yearly microclimate (sun, wind, weather, etc.) thus becoming a specific and unique solution that offers the most user friendly environment 12 months per year.
  2. Same for the microgeology and microgeography (natural and human).
  3. The design will be a landscape as much as a building scape.
  4. The design will be a naturally flowing Linkage between downtown and the waterfront including movement and views of pedestrians and vehicles.
  5. The design will be an appropriate, ceremonial ending-beginning to Main Street and an exciting entrance-exit to and from Burlington.
  6. The design will be a good neighbor and integrate, reflect, enhance adjacent property and activities.
  7. Same for the relationship to Union Station.
  8. The design solution will be internally flexible in terms of tenants and activities.
  9. The design solution should be fun and colorful with entertaining, amusing and enjoyable spaces and activities. It should be a "theatre" for human interaction.
  10. We (the whole Landing Team) should have a good time doing this! The doing of it is as important as the product.

Mission Statement

24 August 1992

Create a place that is intimate, friendly and filled with flexibility.

A place that feels real, with light and air and idiosyncracies, not the standard commercial block with lots of volume, but little perimeter wall. This sense of place is also the energy strategy - natural ventilation, natural light, shading devices, insulation. In this way the architecture is not separated from conservation, but embodies it without add ons or complex systems.

Since we want flexibility, the energy systems strategy must be somewhat simple and so dumb so that it will work no matter what happens and so that there is as much individual control as possible.

Take account not just of what the building is made of, and how the energy is consumed, but what happens to what comes in and goes out of the building - in other words design should respect the flow of, and provide places for, recycling.
